Southern California will be warmer than NorCal with highs in the low 60s in San Francisco and mid to high 60s in San Diego. Perfect for sightseeing in the cities, strolling the beaches, and hiking the National and State parks without the summer crowds.

However, if you do want a white Christmas or to ski, from the major destinations like San Francisco, LA, or San Diego, you’re never more than a few hours from snowy mountains. You can have your sunshine while you ski down the slopes wearing nothing more than a sweater.

If you’re looking for holiday festivities, there are an abundance of activities. Many coastal harbor towns like Santa Barbara, Newport Beach, Sausalito, and San Diego light up with annual boat parades every year. For four weeks in December, the Monterey Wharf offers an array of free holiday entertainment such as singers, dancers, and musicians. In Ontario you can learn how to make candy canes, and in Solvang they make gingerbread house. Solvang also has a magical Christmas market as does San Francisco (Union Square), Santa Barbara, Big Bear, Sacramento, Riverside, Temecula, and more!

From ice skating rinks to amusement parks to performing arts centers, California gets in the holiday spirit. From charming Gold Rush towns to the state’s biggest cities, you’ll find the state wonderfully decorated. California is also home to some pretty famous Christmas trees. You can see the giant sequoia President Calvin Coolidge named the Nation’s Christmas Tree in Kings Canyon National Park. And visit the the tiny town of Ferndale in Northern California that boasts the highest live Christmas tree. Additionally, many other cities will have large trees shimmering in prominently places. There are so many, you’ll have a hard time choosing which to see!

Guatemala

December is the perfect time to visit Guatemala, given its squarely in the country’s dry season. Between the warm temperatures and the clear, sunny skies, you’ll have the perfect weather to explore the country’s volcanoes, lakes, and Mayan ruins.

Additionally, the holidays are a particularly festive time to visit Guatemala. Throughout December, you may stumble across elaborate parades in the streets for Christmas and get to enjoy lots of fireworks for New Years. Guatemala City is renowned for having an unbelievable amount of fireworks lighting up the sky to ring in the New Year.

Most travelers focus their attention on destinations in the south of the country. For example, the colonial city of Antigua is used as the springboard to explore its neighboring volcanoes, Pacaya and Fuego, the latter of which erupts every 15 to 20 minutes. Additionally, visitors flock to the small Mayan villages around Lake Atitlan, like San Marcos, which offers lots of yoga studios, reiki healing, and bohemian vibes or San Pedro, with some of the best (and most affordable!) Spanish schools in Central America.

That being said, don’t miss exploring other parts of the country. For example, the crystal clear turquoise pools of Semuc Champey in the rainforests of central Guatemala offer the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Additionally, the impressive Tikal ruins, found in northern Guatemala, is one of the biggest and best preserved Mayan archeological sites on the planet and is a must-stop for any history buff.

Given the lovely weather and festivities around Guatemala, it’s also typically one of the busiest times for tourism in the country. Be sure to book your accommodations well in advance. This is especially in more remote areas, like Semuc Champey or Flores, the gateway to Tikal, where accommodations are surprisingly limited and can sell out during the busier timeframes.

Colombia

December is one of the driest months in Colombia with average temperatures ranging from 75°F (24°C) to 86°F (30°C) depending on the region. It’s the ideal time for outdoor adventures and enjoying the stunning landscapes Colombia has to offer. On the one hand, the coastal areas like Cartagena and Santa Marta promise sunny skies and relaxing beach days. The highland regions, like Medellín and Bogotá, on the other hand, remain refreshing – perfect for hiking and city trips. You could start your adventure in Colombia’s capital city Bogotá, then continue through the coffee region’s scenic landscapes and the vibrant city of Medellín and end your trip with relaxing on the Caribbean beaches of the Rosario Islands and strolling through Cartagena’s colorful streets.

When in Buenos Aires in December, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the giant Christmas tree at Galerías Pacífico shopping mall. Apart from that, the Christmas decorations in shops and streets tend to be less in Argentina than in other countries.

In Argentina, Christmas Eve is celebrated on the evening of December 24. The celebrations on Christmas Eve also tend to be more relaxed and laidback in Argentina compared to other countries.

On Christmas Eve, many Argentinian families meet for a traditional Argentinian BBQ, also known as “asado”, by the pool or indoors with the AC on. At midnight, it is common to celebrate with a glass of champagne and watch fireworks.

If you are not eating asado on Christmas, it is common for Argentinian families to eat cold food. One of the most beloved Christmas meals in Argentina is the Italian “vitel thoné”, a dish made of slices of meat topped with a tuna-anchovy sauce. For dessert, you will normally have a “pan dulce”, a sweet bread with dried fruit or chocolate chips.

December is the beginning of the summer vacation for most Argentinians. Bigger cities like Buenos Aires and Mendoza are normally less crowded than normal during Christmas. But other tourist destinations popular among locals like the Iguazu Falls are likely to be more crowded during December.

Tromsø, in northern Norway, is a top spot for a December escape, especially if you’re after a true Arctic adventure. With long, dark nights, daylight is from 9-2 pm in December, it’s one of the best places to see the Northern Lights. December’s polar nights make it easier to catch the famous green and purple glow lighting up the sky. It’s a bucket list sight and an experience that should be on everyone’s to-do list.

December sees Tromsø transform and embrace the Christmas spirit. In keeping with tradition there is a Christmas market and the town is lit up with decorations. Slightly less traditional they also put on a special “Christmas Cinema”, with Christmas classics under the starry sky, wrap up warm and grab yourself a mulled wine or hot chocolate.

Beyond the Northern lights and Christmas cheer, Tromsø has plenty of activities to keep you busy. Dog sledding for those who enjoy a little adrenaline, top tip make sure you do a trip where you get to drive yourself. If you prefer a gentler pace, or something more Santa-themed, reindeer sleigh rides with Sámi guides are a great option, running both day and night. For something a bit faster, snowmobiling lets you see another side of the landscape, with the right tour you can venture deep into some of the local forests.

Back in the town, Tromsø has a cozy vibe, with plenty of excellent cafes, pubs and restaurants where you can warm up with local dishes like reindeer stew. If you fancy a bit of culture, the Polar Museum offers a peek into Norway’s history of Arctic exploration, while the Arctic Cathedral is worth a visit for its unique design and carol singing.

Spain

Average December high temperatures range from 10°C to 16°C (50°F to 60°F). The warmest and dryest weather is typically found in the Algarve and on Madeira Island. While it’s not beach and swimming weather, it can be ideal for exploring historic sites and for hiking, kayaking, and land-based sports. Winter in Lisbon and Porto tends to be cooler, perfect for exploring the cozy urban atmosphere and decorated streets without the summer heat. While you won’t find heavy snow, you can expect more rainy days than in summer.

Visitors can enjoy Christmas markets filled with local crafts and foods, with Portuguese Christmas classics such as bolo rei (king cake), rabanadas (French toast), and arroz doce (rice pudding). You can also attend the Glasgow Christmas Markets. The two main locations for the markets are George Square and St Enoch Square. Stalls line the squares, selling everything from artisanal gifts to delicious festive food, creating a perfect setting for holiday shopping. It also features a large ice-skating rink, carnival rides, and a towering Christmas tree.

December transforms Scotland’s scenery into a winter wonderland, especially in the Highlands and Cairngorms National Park. Plus, Scotland has several ski resorts, such as Glencoe and the Nevis Range, which are often overlooked as winter destinations. Snow sports enthusiasts can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, or even ice climbing in these breathtaking landscapes.

December weather in Scotland can be cold. Snow is common in higher altitudes, while cities experience frosty, crisp air with occasional rain showers.

Czechia

For those who don't mind cold temperatures, the Czech Republic is ideal to visit in December! Most cities bring out their best festive decor and there are cute Christmas markets everywhere.

Of course, you cannot leave out Prague - it's amazing at Christmas time. The Christmas markets start in late November and some of them last until January 6. However, tourists have already found out about the charm of Prague Christmas markets, so it does get crowded, especially at the most traditional market of them all - the Old Town Square Christmas market. But, you still have options even if you want to avoid crowds - e.g., the Christmas market at Náměstí Míru is a lot more local.

Other Czech cities are not much behind, though. They just lie off the beaten path for foreign tourists and if it ever gets crowded, it's with locals. E.g., Brno and Olomouc are both known for their wonderful Christmas markets, so do consider taking a trip to at least one of these cities!

If you get especially lucky, it may snow in the Czech Republic in December. Be aware that cities don't receive as much snow as the mountains, but in recent years even the mountainous areas don't have a thick enough snow cover and have to add artificial snow to the slopes. Speaking of slopes, you can engage in various winter sports as well. The Czech Republic has several mountain ranges - e.g., the Ore Mountains, the Giant Mountains, the Jeseník Mountains, etc. They are great for downhill skiing, snowboarding, and often even cross-country skiing, but one needs better snow conditions for that. There are ice rinks in many cities - in Prague at the Wenceslas Square, and in Brno and Olomouc just outside the very heart of the city.

When it comes to temperatures, they are likely to drop below zero (Celsius), but mostly at night. During the day, the temperature should hover around zero Celsius (32 °F) and may crawl up to 2.1°C (35.8°F). The key to staying warm in Prague in winter is layering and making occasional stops at Prague's numerous cafés.

Finland

One of the best countries to visit in December is Finland. This time of year is special because you can see the enchanting Northern Lights, especially in Lapland. The snowy landscapes are breathtaking, and you can feel like you’re in a winter wonderland. December is also when many holiday festivities take place, making it a joyful time to visit.

You can enjoy the Christmas markets in cities like Helsinki or spend one day in Turku, where you will find handmade crafts, delicious food, and warm drinks. One popular treat is glögi, a hot spiced drink that will keep you warm. You might also see Santa Claus in Rovaniemi, known as the official hometown of Santa. It’s a fun place for families, with reindeer rides and cozy cabins.

Crowds in December can vary. Popular attractions, like the Christmas markets and Santa’s Village, may be busy, especially closer to Christmas. Be prepared to wait for an hour if you want to sit on Santa’s lap in Rovaniemi. However, many outdoor activities, like skiing, snowshoeing, or dog sledding can be enjoyed with fewer people around. Be sure to book activities ahead of time as December is peak season. Finland is filled with breathtaking nature so feel free to find a quiet spot in nature to take in the beautiful scenery.

Don’t forget to stay up late and try to spot the Northern Lights. On a cold, clear night you have really good odds to see them in most of Finland, but especially up north!

The weather in December can be quite cold, with temperatures often dropping below freezing. Be sure to dress warmly with layers, hats, gloves, and boots. The Finnish people say that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.

Italy

Italy is a beautiful country, famous for its rich history, ancient ruins, and delicious cuisine. Although you can head here at any time of year, there’s something special about visiting in December.

Italians know how to celebrate Christmas, so you can really get into the festive spirit. You’ll find bustling Christmas markets up and down the country, but the cities of Rome, Milan, and Florence offer some of Italy’s best markets.

Aside from the Christmas markets, you can enjoy delicious festive sweet treats (such as panettone), live nativity scenes, and traditional foods.

Not only that, but the festive season in Italy runs from the 8th of December until the 6th of January, so they celebrate Christmas for much longer than other countries. This is due to an old tradition, where it’s believed that Befana (a witch-like old woman) delivers presents to children in January, rather than Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.

Aside from the festivities, there’s the opportunity to enjoy Italy's many ski resorts at this time of year. There are around 300 recognised ski resorts in the country, with many of these being located in the Alps.

Better yet, December falls in Italy’s low season so you can expect fewer crowds (although the main tourist attractions can still be pretty busy). As there are less tourists, you’ll also witness a more authentic side to the country. There are some fantastic accommodation deals at this time of year too!

If you plan to visit Italy in December, just make sure you wrap up warm. The weather varies depending on where you are, but even in the southern regions, average temperatures typically fall between 12°C to 16°C. In the north, it’s much cooler, where you can expect temperatures between 3°C to 10°C.

Georgia is the ultimate winter destination. It’ll be crisp and cold, and you might even see snow in the cities! But if you want to be sure that you’re going to get snow, jump in a marshrutka (a local minivan common in ex-Soviet republics), and head up to the Kazbegi mountains. Here you can ski or just behold the views of the majestic mountains with a warm drink in hand. Make sure you see historic Gergeti Trinity Cathedral perched on a hill with the mighty Mount Kazbek as the backdrop.

Did you know that Georgia is the birthplace of wine? The world’s oldest wine-making vessels have been found right here with archaeologists dating them to 6000 BC. So, Georgia knows how to do wine! But it’s not just the wine that’ll warm you up; Georgian cuisine is THE perfect comfort food. Think chewy breads with melted cheese (khachapuri), herby bean stews, huge chewy dumplings filled with broth and herby mushrooms. Georgian cuisine is great for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike.

After all the skiing, and eating and drinking, soak yourself in Tbilisi’s thermal sulphur baths. Hire a private bath with a hot and cold pool because you will need respite from the 40°C/104°F thermal water! And if you’re looking for the full authentic experience, book a kisi scrub. It only lasts about ten minutes but it is a brutal experience that will leave you feeling baby soft afterwards.

Georgia is an Orthodox Christian country, which means that Christmas is not celebrated on 25th December; but the 7th January instead. Christmas markets and festivities start later in the month, but also carry on through the end of December and into the beginning of January. So, if you’re not quite ready for Christmas to be over, you could extend it with a trip to Georgia!

Estonia

This small European destination transforms into a winter wonderland. Better yet, crowd levels in December are fairly low as this country is not quite on most tourists’ radar.

Ljubljana, the capital, comes alive with festive markets and bustling streets decorated with twinkling lights. Stalls selling handmade crafts, mulled wine, and traditional Slovenian foods like potica (a nut roll) and kranjska klobasa (a local sausage) pop up all over the city. You will find Ljubljana’s main Christmas tree standing proudly in Prešeren Square – a must-visit at night when it is illuminated by the Triple Bridge’s glow.

Meanwhile, in the more mountainous regions near Lake Bled and the Julian Alps, the weather dips below freezing. Lake Bled is magical in December: surrounded by snow-dusted mountains and far more pleasant without huge crowds. Those seeking a more traditional feel of Christmas are welcome to visit Alsace and, in particular, the postcard-perfect Strasbourg, which hosts one of the oldest and most renowned Christmas markets in Europe. Alternatively, for a cozier feel, the same region has lots of scenic villages, one of them being Colmar. This is a lovely location in December, with people mingling, shopping, and enjoying food from street vendors.

Those who appreciate active December vacations are welcome to explore villages in the Alps closer to the Swiss and Italian borders. The region is among the favorites for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. And after an active day, there’s nothing better than snuggling up by the fire.

One wintery destination that should come to mind for December is the beautiful mountainous location of Switzerland. Switzerland has a bit of everything for everyone in December, which makes it a great place for Winter. Such festivities, activities and things to do include visiting the large Christmas markets in Basel, Zurich and Montreux, staying at mountain resorts for winter activities, relaxing at local spa facilities and enjoying the stunning scenery while exploring.

Zurich is one of the biggest Christmas markets in Switzerland, held throughout the whole of December. But all of the local markets in the country include the very best swiss fondues you can taste, local homemade gifts to buy and live music to listen to, so choosing any of them will be a great day out. It can be cold with minus temperatures, so wrapping up warm for the large cities is a must.

For Winter activities, skiing and snowboarding comes to mind, with many snowy locations to do this. Some winter locations include Zermatt (even for non-skiers), San Bernardino and Davos. For all ages, you can also adventure down the mountains on toboggans, such as at Mount Rigi and in Bergun. Another winter activity is to try snowshoe trekking, with special clip on rackets for your shoes to be able to hike long distances in the snow. It’s quite fun and lets you explore unique routes through the Alps.

There are also destinations within Switzerland that have a lot of sunshine, such as in Lugano Switzerland. This is located in the southern canton of Ticino, bordering Italy. Here it’s perfect if you are looking for some winter sunshine surrounded by palm trees in Switzerland instead.

Lech is the picture-perfect village you see in postcards and Christmas jigsaw puzzles. I've been to Europe many times, but this place honestly took my breath away!

Surrounded by the snowy alpine mountains, it is a wonderful vacation spot for all ages and ideal for those who want to venture into winter sports, such as skiing and snowboarding. Lech has extensive ski areas that are highly versatile and equally popular among families, free riders, and ski tourers. For reference, my first time skiing was in Lech, but the trainers there were excellent and I had such a great time, I honestly wouldn't have had it any other way!

If you decide to go to Lech, bring thermals, and make sure you wear at least three to four layers as it snows quite a bit. You can also rent all the skiing gear from the locals, including jackets and trousers, which might help bring down the size of your suitcase.

For activities, Lech is all about the slopes. Winter sports are a must at this destination! Despite what you might be thinking, Lech is not overly crowded in December, and I had plenty of space to learn how to ski, and the pros had plenty of space to do their thing. Crowds were never an issue during any part of the trip.

Expect fine-dining restaurants, luxurious hotels, and, of course, epic skiing at Lech. It's a pricy vacation but a once-in-a-lifetime experience you will never forget.

Belgium

Oman is such an amazing, yet underrated destination. Oman offers you a city escape, a vast desert region, mountains, and beaches, all in one neat package. October to March is the best season to visit this country and December is a great option. The average temperature in the capital Muscat at this time of year is a warm 23°C, reaching highs of 27°C. Perfect for city sightseeing, relaxing on the beach, swimming in the sea, and visiting the mountains and the desert area. The nights are cold both in the mountains and desert regions.

I would recommend a road trip across Oman to experience the beauty of this underrated destination. This could be from 5-10 days. You will most likely fly into Muscat, the capital city to enter Oman. It is easy to rent a car at the international airport itself. The roads are wide and of good quality across the country.

Oman is an attractive destination for an outdoor enthusiast. Spend a couple of days at Jebel Akhtar or Jebel Shams, the mountains that lie to the north of Muscat. You can hike, rock climb, and soak in the views of the canyon. Spending a night or two in a desert camp is the best way to experience life in Wahiba Sands, the vast desert region in the middle of Oman. Dune bashing and star gazing will be your highlights here. You can stop at a couple of wadis and fishing villages on your way to the desert.

Finally, there are many cultural attractions in Muscat including the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. You must also indulge in local cuisine in the capital city.

We visited Thailand twice in December, and it’s, without a doubt, one of the best months to travel to the country. December offers ideal weather across most regions, especially in northern Thailand, Bangkok, and the western coast. December to February marks the peak season, so prices tend to be higher, and hotels can reach full capacity. It’s highly recommended to book flights and accommodations well in advance to save on costs.

Thailand is a destination that truly has it all: stunning beaches, lively beach parties, street food, excellent restaurants, massive shopping malls, thrilling outdoor adventures, luxury resorts, and beautiful nature. This makes it a perfect spot for young travellers, friends, couples, and families alike.

Regions to Explore

The Islands: Known for their pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, street food, nature, and water activities.

Bangkok: Thailand’s bustling capital offers a mix of culture, culinary delights, large malls, grand palaces, temples, markets and unique cafes.

If you are looking for a winter wonderland, you can find lower temperatures and tons of powdery snow in Hokkaido! The island features lots of affordable world-class ski resorts for those who are into winter sports. Additionally, because of the cold weather in December, you can fully enjoy one of the most rejuvenating Japanese traditions: soaking in Japanese hot springs, commonly referred to as onsen.

If you are looking for a unique vacation this December that combines the fun elements of a beach vacation with culturally immersive experiences, Kerala on the southwestern coast of India is your best bet. A stroll through Fort Kochi is all you need to revisit the Portuguese, Dutch, and British colonial reminiscences in India. From its architecture to its food, Fort Kochi is a lesson in history by itself.

December is a particularly fun time to visit Kerala. The weather is pleasant with an average daytime temperature of 81 °F (27 °C) and sparse rain. It is the best time for outdoor activities like water sports, houseboat rides, and culture tours.

While India may seem like an odd country to spend the holiday season in, Kerala has some unique festive vibes for you to make the time special. The most vibrant of the festive splendor in Kerala is the Cochin Carnival, a grand celebration and exhibition of Kerala’s culture, food, and crafts. The carnival is conducted from 23rd December to 1st January every year with parades, art performances, and competitions on each day. South Korea is a magical destination in December. Though December might be the low season for travelling to this beautiful country there’s plenty to keep you busy and entertained. South Korea isn’t traditionally a destination we think of when it comes to Christmas, however the celebrations and decorations here are world-class. One of the best sights in Seoul in December is the normally tranquil Cheonggyecheon Stream transformed into a stunning display of floating Christmas light displays. The colder winter months also provide plenty of excuses to experience the hearty, smoky Korean-style barbecue restaurants that line the streets, though beware – you will come out smelling like smoked meats!

One of Seoul’s main tourist attractions is a day trip out to the infamous DMZ and surrounding areas where people come from far and wide to catch a glimpse of the hermit kingdom of North Korea. There’s something even more fitting about making this trek in winter as the harsh, icy weather seems to match the dismal sparsity of the divided Korean countries.

Of course, South Korea is much more than just its capital, Seoul, although you could certainly justify a lengthy stay in the city before venturing further afield. The coastal southern region of Busan is a fabulous December destination as the famous beaches are no longer full of tourists and the crowds have gone home for the year. In Busan there is so much to do including visiting the vibrant Gamcheon Culture Village, exploring the Jagalchi Fish Market and getting in touch with the spiritual side of Korea at Haedong Yonggungsa – a large temple complex built on the rocky coastline. Busan also has a fabulous display of Christmas lights and a celebratory atmosphere in December. The streets are full of street food vendors, making the city a great place to sample lots of different elements of Korean cuisine.

Temperatures range between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius and are much more pleasant than the summer heat, but the evenings are cold, so keep that in mind.

Although Christmas is not really celebrated Morocco has its own winter festivals which turn the city into a festive atmosphere. If you visit Morocco in the part of December do not miss Tan-Tan Moussem festival. In traditional Berber culture, a Moussem is a type of annual fair with economic, cultural and social functions. It takes place in Tan-Tan, a desert town in south-western Morocco. This event is happening annual since 1963 and more than 30 tribes from southwestern Morocco and other parts of northwest Africa participate in different workshops, camel rides, dance or storytelling.

If you visit Morocco in the middle of December is held the Marrakech International Film Festival. Movie screenings take place at Jemaa el Fna square as early as 11am during the week-long festival.

If you'd like to celebrate Christmas in Morocco is good to know that Christmas midnight masses are held at the churches in the most big cities like Casablanca and Rabat. Local Moroccan music accompanies the service with traditional hymns in it.
Christmas dinner with a mixture of Moroccan and western dishes combined is held in most restaurants and hotels located within the touristic areas. In some cities Santa Claus goes around riding a camel.
