As the crisp autumn air gives way to the cool embrace of early winter, November emerges as a perfect time to explore the diverse landscapes and vibrant cities of the United States. November is a great month to travel as there are almost no crowds and it also means cheaper accommodations.

I’ve collected 22 recommendations from other travel bloggers! So get ready to pack your bags for your next adventure!

Bryson City, North Carolina

Recommended by Christy at NorthCarolinaTraveler

Bryson City, NC, is pure magic in November. The weather is mild (averaging in the mid-60s), and the leaves create a vibrant calico patchwork of color blanketing this cozy mountain town.

Just a couple of miles from Downtown Bryson City, you can explore three waterfalls on an easy 2.5-mile hike on the Deep Creek trail. For something a bit more unique, hike to the Road to Nowhere, a creepy yet nostalgic tunnel, that started in 1943 but never completed. A reminder of a promise broken in the not-so-distant past. Downtown Bryson City transforms into a Christmas wonderland, looking like something straight out of a Hallmark movie.

One of the highlights is the real-life Polar Express train ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Here, the Polar Express story comes to life as you’re served hot cocoa and refreshments by singing and dancing waitstaff reenacting the iconic holiday movie on a train speeding through the mountains.
Don't miss the Railroad Museum, where you can learn about the history of the area. Shop for locally made goods and unique Christmas items, and indulge in snacks, meals and beverages at locally owned restaurants. Some of my favorites include the Box Car Cafe, a retro 50’s spot serving pizza, sandwiches, and ice cream, and Anthony’s Derailed, a popular bar and lounge located directly across from the train station — perfect for a meal before or after your Polar Express adventure.
November is an ideal time to visit Bryson City and soak in the Christmas atmosphere along with the pleasant weather. While it can get busy, it’s still less crowded than the post-Thanksgiving rush when people flock to see the train and Christmas festivities.

Whether you're hiking to waterfalls or enjoying the holiday cheer, Bryson City in November is the perfect blend of fall colors and a festive spirit.

Nashville, Tennessee

As experienced by Tina Tolbert of The Southern Travelista

Nashville, Tennessee, is one of the best US destinations for a November getaway!  The weather is mild, with daytime highs in the 60s, making it very comfortable weather to explore the city.  In addition to the fabulous weather, crowds tend to be lower during November, with the peak travel season being the summer months.

Beyond the fantastic weather and low crowds, there is so much to do in Nashville.  Nashville is called Music City for a reason! Music is king in Nashville and with its vibrant and diverse music scene, there are countless venues and concerts to enjoy.  November also is a great time to explore the city's many parks.  Hiking in and around Nashville is ideal this time of year, not only is the weather beautiful, but November is the peak season for stunning fall foliage!

If you are planning your visit toward the end of November you'll get to experience some of Nashville's beloved holiday traditions. Cheekwood Botanical Gardens begins its holiday lights outdoor display at the end of the month.  Meanwhile, Gaylord Opryland Resort hosts its annual tree lighting ceremony in mid-November, marking the beginning of their Country Christmas activities.  My family loves visiting the ICE! display and walking through the hotel's beautifully decorated atriums.

With a wide range of activities, mild temperatures, and lower crowds, November in Nashville is truly one of the best times to visit.

Memphis, Tennessee

by Lisa from Followsoots

If you're looking for a terrific place to visit in November, Memphis should be on your list. Memphis is a great year-round destination, but it's really nice in November. This exciting city offers something for everyone to enjoy, including music, history, arts and culture, food and more!

Exploring Memphis in November is nice because the average daytime temperatures are in the 60s, which is excellent for strolling around downtown or hiking in the park. The evenings are generally in the mid-40s, so it's still not too cold to enjoy the city after dark. Additionally, November is not as busy as Spring and Summer, so you don't have to worry about large crowds.

Some of the best things to do in Memphis include visiting Graceland, dancing into the night on Beale Street, and sampling some fabulous Memphis BBQ! It's also an excellent time to explore museums like the National Civil Rights Museum, Rock 'n' Soul Museum, or even Sun Studios. If you're traveling with children, then they will love the Children's Museum of Memphis.

Of course, if you visit in November, you have the added bonus of enjoying Memphis decked out for the holidays. My favorite thing is to see the Peabody Hotel decorated for Christmas and experience the historic Duck March. Another great option is to visit the Memphis Zoo and experience Zoo Lights.

With the mild weather,  outdoor activities are also a great option. Two of my personal favorites are exploring Shelby Farms Park and hanging out in Tom Lee Park on the Mississippi River, but there are many more.  Regardless of what you decide to do in Memphis in November, you will have a fantastic time visiting this beautiful and electrifying city.

Chattanooga, TN

by Alex from Twenty Something Traveler

Chattanooga, Tennessee is a whimsical town no matter the time of year, but it is especially magical in November when the leaves are red, yellow, and orange, the mountain air is chilled, and the people are getting ready for the holidays. The temperature usually sits somewhere between the high 40s and mid 60s making it the perfect time to take a cozy stroll downtown or hike to the top of Lookout Mountain and watch the sun set behind the colorful trees. The crowds have also lessened after the Summer break has ended which means Fall is the best time to be visiting Chattanooga. Sunset Rock is the perfect place to watch the magic happen and can be an easy or lengthy hike depending on what you want to make it. With just a .2-mile walk from the Sunset Rock parking lot or a 3-mile hike from Point Park, this viewpoint is perfect for all levels of adventurers. A unique experience in Chattanooga during November is the ability to have a Thanksgiving meal on the water. The Southern Belle Riverboat offers a Thanksgiving dining experience on a 2-hour cruise down the river, something that not many people can say they have done. Other events taking place in November are the Enchanted Garden of Lights opening at Rock City, the Thanksgiving Market at First Horizon Pavilloin, the opening of outdoor ice skating rinks, and the North Pole experience at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. To me, Chattanooga is the perfect Fall Destination as well as an amazing city to start off your Holidays at the end of the year. The people are friendly, the food scene is fantastic, and the downtown area’s charm is endless.

Maine

by Sam from New England Wanderlust

While the coast of Maine is definitely a top summer and fall foliage destination in the northeast, one of the best and most underrated times to visit is November. During this season of transition from fall to winter, the leaves have fallen, and the trees will be mostly bare. But, you won't find any crowds, and you can enjoy cheap rates at the hotels in an area that is otherwise pretty expensive, and a more peaceful visit overall!

A great way to explore Maine during this special time of year is a road trip along the coast. Starting in the southern region, Kennebunkport is a perfect place to explore. The charming downtown shops and idyllic waterfront scenery are gorgeous year-round. Depending on when you visit, parts of southern Maine may still have some remaining fall foliage the first week of November, too.

Heading up through the Midcoast region, you'll want to make a stop in Portland to see the iconic Portland Head Lighthouse, and then visit towns like Boothbay Harbor, Wiscasset, and Camden. If you're looking for the best place to stay the night during this part of the trip, Camden is an excellent choice, and where you'll find cozy hotels, excellent dining options, and a quaint downtown along the water.

Finally, you'll want to end in Bar Harbor to explore Acadia National Park. One of the best perks about visiting the park in November is that you won't need a permit to drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, which is the first place you can see the sunrise in the U.S. during this month.

One of the best places to stay near Acadia is the Bar Harbor Inn & Spa, which is located on the waterfront, and walkable to all the town's shops and restaurants. During a November stay, you'll definitely want to take advantage of their awesome on-site spa and enjoy a little self-care!

November is considered off-season for some places along Maine's coastline, and you'll want to do your research and know which restaurants will be open during your visit. However, while some places have shut down by November, many places will remain open, so you can still indulge in the state's famous lobster rolls and incredible seafood.

Weather in Maine in November will be a bit all over the place and could be anything from sunny and in the 50's°F, to cold and snowy. However, avoiding the crowds and enjoying a quiet vacation is well worth it! You'll just want to check the forecast a few days before your trip and prepare accordingly.

Charleston, South Carolina

By Krysti from Wanderful Horizons

While Charleston is a great destination year-round, November is, without a doubt, one of the best times to visit the city. Not only is the weather pleasant, but you’re also likely to encounter fewer crowds (especially towards the end of the month). And, as an added bonus, there are a plethora of fun and festive events to check out.

Generally speaking, the weather in November offers minimal rain with temperatures that hover around the low-70s to high-60s. This means, you can actually get outside and enjoy the city, without the stifling heat that can be felt during the summer months - which is definitely a plus, because chances are you’ll be doing a lot of walking!

Although it may be a bit too cold to hop in the ocean, there are plenty of other ways to fill your Charleston itinerary. From museums to parks, plantations, nature preserves, historical landmarks, and unforgettable southern restaurants, there truly is something for everyone here.

And, even if you’d still like to get out on the water, there are opportunities for that as well. Aside from exploring the waterfront park (and pineapple fountain!), you can also kayak through the marshlands, join a sunset cruise, hop aboard a fishing charter, or take the ferry over to Fort Sumter National Historical Park.

Meanwhile, for land lovers, there are a variety of events and festivals to check out. Some of the most notable include the Harvest Festival, the Holiday Festival of Lights, and the Charleston Scottish Games. There’s even a popular barbecue festival, the Holy Smokes Festival, that takes place in Charleston in early November. This event, which draws in the best chefs and pitmasters from across the country, offers up some truly tasty BBQ.

Needless to say, Charleston is one of the best places to visit in November. Between its vibrant cultural events, pleasant weather, and endless opportunities for exploration, Charleston is the perfect fall destination.

Naples, Florida

by Janet from Practical Travel Concepts

Naples, Florida, is a Gulf Coast gem, offering an ideal mix of natural beauty, cultural attractions, and perfect weather. While Naples is a year-round destination, November holds a special allure for visitors.

November brings mild temperatures ranging from 70°F to 80°F (21°C to 27°C), making it ideal for outdoor activities like beach outings, golfing, and exploring parks and nature reserves. It's part of the dry season, so you can expect plenty of sunshine and minimal rain.

In downtown Naples, there's always plenty to do, especially during mid-November's Evening on Fifth, where live musical performances fill Fifth Avenue. Early in the month, the Naples Botanical Gardens hosts the vibrant Dia de Los Muertos Celebration.

As the holiday season begins, Naples comes alive with festive events. Christmas on Third Street South kicks off at the end of November, featuring holiday lights, live music, and a magical snowfall in downtown Naples.

Visiting Naples in November means enjoying the city before the peak winter crowds arrive. Beaches, restaurants, and attractions are less crowded, offering a more relaxed and enjoyable experience. Whether strolling along Fifth Avenue South or taking a sunset cruise, you’ll find it easier to navigate and appreciate the sights.

The pleasant November weather enhances the enjoyment of Naples’ unique attractions. Take a boat tour through the Ten Thousand Islands, visit the Naples Zoo, or explore the Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. The cooler temperatures are also perfect for golfing at the area’s world-class courses.

With its perfect weather, special events, fewer crowds, and unique attractions, Naples, Florida, is an ideal November destination. Whether you seek relaxation, adventure, or cultural experiences, Naples has something for every visitor. Don't miss the chance to discover this charming city at one of the best times of the year.

Psst: Naples is a great addition to an epic Florida road trip.

Orlando, Florida

by Andy from Explore with Finesse

Orlando, Florida is often celebrated as a year-round vacation destination. It is an especially great place to visit in November. During this time, the weather is extremely pleasant, averaging in the mid-70s°F during the day. Visiting Orlando in November allows you to escape the cold that takes over the rest of the country while avoiding the heat and humidity that you would find there during the summer months.

In November, you can expect to find less crowds compared to the summer months. It is also the perfect time to visit before the holiday rush in December. Visiting during this shoulder season will allow you to have a much more enjoyable experience at popular destinations, such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. You can spend less time waiting in lines and more time enjoying the attractions!

There are several special events in Orlando that occur in November. One that I highly recommend is the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival. This festival takes place at Walt Disney World and allows you to sample food and wine from 6 different continents! This event is perfect for foodies and people interested in other cultures.

A hidden gem to explore in November is the Scenic Boat Tour in Winter Park. Located just a short drive from downtown Orlando, this tour takes you through the beautiful chain of lakes and historic canals of Winter Park. The cooler weather makes the boat ride even more enjoyable as you admire the impressive estates lining the waterways.

Washington, D.C.

By Jennifer at Family Trip Guides

As a resident of the Washington, D.C. area for 12 years, November is one of my favorite months! DC is in the shoulder season for tourists and definitely a lot less school groups. The weather in November is generally crisp and cool, with temperatures averaging between 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The fall foliage is in full view with the city's numerous parks like Staunton Park, Lincoln Park and of course the National Mall.

One of the most special aspects of visiting D.C. in the Fall is the relative lack of crowds. As the peak tourist season winds down, visitors can enjoy more leisurely explorations of the city's iconic landmarks, such as the National Mall, Lincoln Memorial, and Washington Monument. It's also a great time to visit the 19 free Smithsonian museums without the crowds which come around the December holidays.

A significant event that attracts many to Washington, D.C., in November is Veterans Day. Observed on November 11, this national holiday honors military veterans and is marked by ceremonies and parades throughout the city. The most notable event is held at Arlington National Cemetery, where a wreath-laying ceremony takes place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, attended by dignitaries and veterans. This solemn and poignant event provides a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by servicemen and women and offers visitors a chance to reflect and pay their respects.

I also highly recommend exploring around DC in November including the numerous Farm and Fall Festivals in Northern Virginia where you can have hayride, pick pumpkins and go on epic barn slides! You can also venture outside of DC to the Shenandoah Mountains for great hiking!

St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

by Jake from Laaurenjade

St Thomas is home to the capital of the USVI and is the most active cruise port in the entire Caribbean, so you might think it would be incredibly busy. However, November is the perfect time to visit St Thomas because it falls during shoulder season. Peak tourist season kicks in in December and it’s close to the end of hurricane season, meaning you’ll find better prices for accommodation, and beaches and attractions will be much quieter.

But why St Thomas, what is there to do here? Well, this slice of paradise has some of the most beautiful and world-renowned beaches with crystal clear waters, such as bustling Magens Bay or the secluded and untouched Lindquist Beach. Also, if you love getting on or in the water, St Thomas is a great spot for some incredible sailing, island hopping, snorkeling, and diving.

There are plenty of fun things to do in St Thomas, and they aren’t all beach and ocean-based. If you’d rather stay on land, then jump in a cable car and head up to Paradise Point for a bird's eye view of Charlotte Amalie and across the ocean towards the neighboring islands. Or, if you’re a shopper and love jewelry, then you can wander the cobblestone streets of Charlotte Amalie. They’re packed with jewelry stores where you can find everything from stunning diamonds and colorful gemstones to unique, handcrafted pieces you won't see anywhere else – and they’re all duty-free!

If you fancy yourself as a keen explorer, then you can use St Thomas as a base to explore more of the US Virgin Islands. Inter-island ferries make it easy to take trips to St John, St Croix, Water Island, Buck Island, and more.

New Orleans, Louisiana

by Dotti from Travel Oasis

New Orleans is a fantastic place to visit in November. It’s vibrant, and lively, has world-class music, scrumptious food and the weather is pleasant. If you’re looking for a place to visit in the US in November, look no further!

In November, the weather in New Orleans is mild, with highs averaging around 71F and lows around 51F. There is a slight chance of rain (averaging 5 days for the month), but hey, this is New Orleans after all! With the summer heat dissipating, it’s perfect weather for walking around and sightseeing, which is a blessing, considering that so much of New Orleans is best explored on foot.

There are so many fun and exciting things to do in New Orleans, that it really does have something to offer every visitor. The French Quarter is famous for its history and architecture. Next door in the Marigny, you’ll find Frenchmen Street, the best place in the city to see live music, day or night. The Garden District is famous for its walking tours, but there are many other amazing neighborhoods to explore in New Orleans, so be sure to check them out. If walking isn’t your thing, you can take a river cruise down the Mississippi, or head out of town for a swamp tour.

November is shoulder season in New Orleans, so you won’t have to worry too much about crowds. It’s also a great time to tuck into some of the delicious, rich food that New Orleans is famous for. There’s a creole gumbo festival in Treme, plus a beignet festival as well. And if you love the Caribbean, there’s also the Bayou Bacchanal, a festival to celebrate Caribbean culture and community, complete with a parade down Canal Street.

Frankenmuth, Michigan

by Kurt from Kurt From Canada

Promising a European-esque escape within the heart of central Michigan, the small Bavarian-style city of Frankenmuth is the perfect destination for spending a weekend getaway in November.

Founded in 1845, the city boasts a distinct German heritage that can be found within the community’s charming Bavarian architecture and traditional shops that include the Frankenmuth Clock Company, the Frankenmuth Cheese Hause, and the Frankenmuth Brewery, one of the oldest microbreweries in America.

And while Frankenmuth is a magical destination throughout the year, it is even more enchanting between November and January. Beyond the city’s Bavarian influences, Frankemuth’s most significant claim to fame is Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland.

Celebrated as the world’s largest Christmas store, Bronner’s is open throughout the year and has garnered a reputation that is synonymous with the holiday season. A reputation that has been fully embraced by the local community, who transform their city into a luminescent Christmas village every winter.

While holiday displays and the famous Frankenmuth ChristKindlMarkt are open throughout December, the best time to visit this fairy-tale-like community is before Thanksgiving weekend in November, which is followed by the swarming crowds of the peak holiday season.

Any successful day in Frankenmuth begins at Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, where you will spend the morning browsing through vast shelves of Christmas ornaments, decorations, and thematic Christmas village sets.

Once fully immersed in the holiday spirit, you are then ready to experience the wonder of historic Main Street. Upon approaching the city from Bronner’s, you will cross the Cass River along the Bulgarian Inn Holz Brucke Covered Bridge and come out into a European village setting.

Spend some time wandering around the various authentic German boutiques or head to the Frankenmuth Brewery for a Bavarian beverage and pretzel. Just be sure to book your dinner reservations at either the Bavarian Inn Restaurant or Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth for their famous chicken dinners and one-of-a-kind dining experiences.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Recommended by Lisa from Waves and Cobblestones

If you’re looking for a fantastic US destination for a November getaway, look no further than San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Most people forget that this Caribbean island belongs to the United States, so you don’t even need a passport to visit!

San Juan is a fabulous place to visit for history buffs.  Explore the Spanish fortresses of El Morro and Castillo de San Cristóbal, and check out the sentry boxes along the historic walls that protected the city.  Or just relax in a plaza and soak up San Juan’s unique vibe –it’s a charming combination of Spanish and Caribbean cultures.

One of the most popular things to do in San Juan is to walk the El Paseo del Morro National Recreational Trail.  You’ll see city highlights like the beautiful Raices Fountain, the San Juan Gate, and El Morro as you follow this waterfront path.  Keep your eyes open for the cat colony!

Savor tasty local favorite dishes like mofongo and sip a refreshing pina colada (which was invented in Puerto Rico!)  You can also cross the bay and tour the Bacardi rum factory or even take a mixology class.

Enjoy local festivities as Puerto Rico celebrates the ‘Discovery of Puerto Rico’ day on November 19th, and then kicks off the beginning of the beloved Christmas holiday season after Thanksgiving.  Plus, San Juan in November is typically less crowded, so you may be able to score some hotel deals.

November weather in San Juan is still great for sightseeing, with highs in the upper 80s and lows near 70 degrees.  Bring along a hat to protect you from the sun and a mini umbrella in case of rain, and you’ll be set for any weather.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Contributed by Dhwani from Trrips and Maps

Las Vegas is an amazing destination to visit in November. While summer temperatures are in triple digits, the November temperature ranges between 60-70 degrees. For many in the United States facing shorter and darker days and colder weather, this moderate temperature is a relief.

The November weather in Las Vegas is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Make a day trip from Las Vegas to Red Rock Canyon or Valley of Fire State Park for beautiful hikes. Tour the Hoover Dam for its engineering marvel. Or take a boat ride on Lake Mead. For us Pacific Northwesters used to hiking in mossy forests by the rivers, the Las Vegas landscape brings a refreshing change of scenery and outdoor experience.

Las Vegas makes for a great base camp to explore the national parks. Death Valley National Park is ~2 hours drive and Grand Canyon National Park is ~4 hours drive away. You will face fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures.

For those not into the outdoors, the casinos and the shows will continue to hold their charm and entertain tourists. The Vegas strip, Fremont Street Experience, the Bellagio fountains, the restaurants, and the world-class shows will be as lively and entertaining. Try a concert at the Sphere which is an experience unlike any other. Or just enjoy the changing imagery of the Sphere from the outside, which is oddly relaxing.

To catch some holiday lights in late November, Ethel M’s Cactus Garden, Magical Forest at Opportunity Village and Las Vegas Motor Speedway would be great destinations for families.

The one thing to be aware of is that many hotels close their pools in winter. Some hotels have heated pools, but those options might be limited or on the more expensive side.

Psst: if you are planning a Bachelorette in Las Vegas, I have the article just for you.

Newport Beach, California

by Carmen from Basic Economy B

Newport Beach, CA, is a delightful destination to visit in November for several reasons, not least of which are the nice weather and lack of crowds. Located on the coast in Orange County, Newport Beach enjoys the year-round sunshine that Southern California is famous for. The weather in Newport Beach in November is still nice enough that it’s considered “Local’s Summer,” which are the fall months when tourists are gone but temperatures are still pleasant. The climate remains mild and pleasant, with average high temperatures around 75°F (24°C) and lows around 50°F (10°C).

This past November, I spent several days at the beach, enjoying the peace and quiet that you don’t always find on a pristine beach in Southern California. You can watch the dolphins go up and down the beach, rent a kayak or paddleboard, go parasailing, or even take a surf lesson. The water is still warm enough that a wetsuit will keep you plenty warm (even if you tumble repeatedly into the sea like I did last November).

If you’re not a beach bum, you’ll still be able to enjoy all of the other outdoor activities the city has. Walking along the boardwalk, strolling along the beach, or enjoying the 10-mile nature loop at the Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve (or the Back Bay as the locals call it) are all excellent choices in November.

November is a great time to explore Newport Beach’s other attractions without dealing with the intense summer heat. The Balboa Fun Zone, with its adorable Ferris wheel, arcade games, and waterfront dining, is open year-round and visiting is one of many exciting things to do in Newport Beach. Fishing charters and whale-watching cruises leave Newport throughout November; you may catch a glimpse of the humpback whales in the area in early November or see the beginning of the gray whale migration.

Julian, California

by Andrea from andreagoesplaces

If you’re from California, you know that Julian is the place to go during Fall. It’s a small town in San Diego County famous for its apples, which means fantastic, and fresh apple cider, apple pie, and hard cider during the Fall. Aside from great apples, it’s also a historic California town, famous for being the epicenter of the gold rush in Southern California. You can actually visit some of the gold mines (that are still standing) and even pan for gold. Go for the small-town charm and great fall vibes, and stay for the atmosphere!

In November, the trees turn color, a whole sea of red, orange, and yellow. Numerous breweries in town make amazing hard ciders using the apples grown in Julien. However, the apple pie from Julian's Pie Company is the most famous thing that attracts people to Julian. The apple pies from this company are so renowned that they even sell them in grocery stores in San Diego. Of course, they’re best when fresh and straight from the source. The pies are so famous that you need to reserve your apple pie during Thanksgiving week if you want them! But, aside from pie, you can also go apple picking, but make sure to call ahead in case the orchards are all picked out.

Like most parts of California, the weather in November isn’t too cold and pretty mild. Temperatures can range from 50 F to 70 F with blue skies and low humidity. It can get crowded during the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, especially around the Julian Pie Company, breweries, and apple orchards. Julian is the perfect place for a day trip from San Diego, a short staycation, or a weekend trip. There are tons of cute hotels and Airbnbs to stay in, decorated in cute small-town American decor (and lots of apples).

San Francisco, California

by Victoria from Guide Your Travel

San Francisco, known for its iconic Golden Gate Bridge, vibrant neighbourhoods, and cultural landmarks, offers a unique charm in November. The weather is mild during this time, with average temperatures ranging from 50°F (10°C) to 64°F (18°C). While the city generally enjoys clearer skies, the infamous fog, known as "Karl," can still appear, adding a mystical touch to the cityscape.

November in San Francisco is unique for several reasons. One of the standout events is the San Francisco International Auto Show, held annually at the Moscone Center. This event showcases the latest automotive innovations and attracts car enthusiasts from all over the world. Another notable event is the Embarcadero Center's Building Lighting Ceremony, which kicks off the holiday season with a spectacular display of over 17,000 lights adorning the buildings, followed by an ice-skating performance and fireworks.

The crowds in San Francisco in November are smaller than the summer peak, making it an ideal time for visitors who prefer a more relaxed experience. Tourist hotspots like Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz Island, and Union Square are less congested, allowing for more leisurely exploration. This period is also perfect for enjoying the city's culinary scene, with numerous restaurants offering seasonal menus featuring local produce.

In addition, November marks the beginning of the Dungeness crab season, a local delicacy that seafood lovers will want to attend. Exploring the city's neighbourhoods, from the bohemian Mission District to the upscale Nob Hill, provides a taste of San Francisco's diverse culture and history. Overall, November offers a blend of mild weather, festive events, and manageable crowds, making it a fantastic time to experience San Francisco's unique charm.

Tucson, Arizona

by Catherine from Postcard Narrative

Are you looking for a spot to thaw out as winter weather creeps into much of North America? Find perpetual sunshine in Tucson, Arizona plus an enticing mix of attractions, landscapes, and eateries to explore.

November in Tucson kicks off with two unique local events.  The city buzzes with the All Souls Procession, a Día de los Muertos celebration.  Often overlapping the same festival dates, the Tucson Celtic Festival brings a taste of Scotland to the Southwest. One of the biggest draws to this event is the Scottish Highland Games. If you are feeling particularly ambitious, you can even sign up to compete!

Weather in November is optimal for outdoor activities reaching average highs of 75°F.  Be prepared for chilly nights though, which typically drop into the 40s.

Because the city is quite spread out, you’ll want to have a rental car for your Tucson stay. This will allow you to see a large variety of what the area has to offer. The fact that it is spread out prevents any places from feeling particularly crowded as well. (Other than festivals, naturally.)

Two of the top attractions in Tucson are Sabino Canyon and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, but these are just the beginning. Tucson offers endless fun for the whole family. Sabino Canyon is part of the Coronado National Forest. Make sure to get a stamp for your National Park Passport at the Visitor Center and ask about the Junior Ranger program. The most popular way to see the Canyon is to take a $15 narrated tram to the top and enjoy a leisurely walk downhill.

Do not underestimate the immensity of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. It’s a botanical garden, aquarium, zoo and natural history museum all in one. You can spend six hours here and still not see it all. Arrive in the morning and plan your visit around their daily schedule. You won’t want to miss their raptor show which starts in late October and continues until April. If you have extra time, consider day trips to Chiricahua National Monument, Tombstone, Casa Grande, Mount Lemmon or Bisbee.

For a delicious meal, try Tumerico, a vegetarian restaurant known for locally sourced ingredients and surprising flavors. For a laid-back vibe, Barrio Brewing offers great food and even better brews. And for a quick treat, check out Arizona fast food favorites like Cane’s or Eegee’s.

Sedona, Arizona

by Marina from Travel Eat Blog

Sedona, Arizona, is a fantastic destination to visit in November. Located just a couple of hours away from Phoenix, Sedona is surrounded by natural red rock formations, making you feel like you're on another planet. November in Sedona is mild and pleasant with daytime temperatures typically in the 60s to 70s and nice, crisp evenings with temperatures in the 40s. This is the perfect weather for enjoying all the outdoor activities that Sedona has to offer and then relaxing in a hot tub at night. Spring and Fall are popular times to visit Arizona, but if you plan your trip later in November, you'll find fewer crowds. This means a more intimate experience and lower hotel prices.

While the town of Sedona is lovely with plenty of shops and food options to explore, the real magic lies outdoors and November is perfect for exploring its trails. One of Sedona's most iconic landmarks is Cathedral Rock. The hike to the top is challenging but even while walking a part of the trail, you will see amazing panoramic views of the red rock formations. The Devil's Bridge Trail and the Bell Rock Pathway are other popular hiking options, but there are so many options to choose from!

For a delightful break, stop at Sedonuts for coffee and donuts. This cute cafe offers a variety of delicious donuts and freshly brewed coffee, making it a perfect place to recharge after a hike.

Don't leave Sedona without visiting the Chapel of the Holy Cross - this chapel is built into the red rocks and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. It's a wonderful spot for reflection and a great place to take some photos.

After a day of exploring, enjoy a dinner with a view of the red rocks. The Hudson offers stunning panoramic views of the red rocks from its patio and is a great way to end the day in Sedona.

Chicago, Illinois

by Patti from The Savvy Globetrotter

Chicago is one of the best cities in the United States to visit in November whether looking for fewer crowds or festive holiday activities and events. The average temperature in Chicago during November is about 43° F but it can vary greatly from day to day.

Chicago in November is a good month to enjoy its many outdoor and indoor attractions. If the temperatures are pleasant, take an architecture cruise on the river and admire Chicago’s beautiful skyline and impressive architecture. Other must-see outdoor attractions include the famous Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park, Navy Pier and the Chicago Riverwalk. If the weather is cooler during your visit, Chicago has many excellent and renowned museums and cultural institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry. Other indoor attractions include botanical conservatories and two observation decks for panoramic views from above.

Early November is not very busy and is perfect for visitors looking for fewer crowds. The temperatures are usually pleasant and there are still some fall colors left in the city’s parks and green spaces before the leaves fall out. Mid to late November brings colder weather but also more crowds for the beginning of holiday festivities and activities including outdoor ice skating, lighting ceremonies, holiday lights, Christmas markets, holiday window displays and more.

The annual Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, which takes place the Saturday before Thanksgiving, is one of the most popular events in Chicago and attracts many visitors. The highlight of the celebration is a parade down Michigan Avenue (the largest nighttime parade in the U.S.) during which an estimated one million lights on over 200 trees are illuminated by Mickey and Minnie Mouse from Walt Disney World Resort.

Arches National Park, Utah

by Aaren from What Do You Sea

Boasting the greatest density of natural arches in the world, Arches National Park is a Southern Utah treasure. For the natural playground of its namesake, but also because Delicate Arch, the most famous natural stone arch in the world, was formed here.

The park’s geological marvels gained the eyes of nearly 1.5 million visitors last year, increasing every year. In the main tourism season, May through September, travelers line up to enter the park on a timed reservation system, parking is competitive, and crowds are at an all-time high.

This is why visiting Arches in November is so idyllic: visitation numbers reduce significantly, you don’t need a timed entry reservation, temperatures are much cooler, and there is a slight chance you could see Arches National Park blanketed in snow.

You even have a chance for a first-come-first-served campsite at the Devil’s Garden Campground at the heart of the park. Otherwise, accommodation options in Moab are cheapest this time of year since it’s out of the main tourism season, but before the ski resort season.

The temperatures sit around 55 F during the day and can drop to near or below freezing in the evenings, so warm layers are a must this month. Especially if you’re planning on sunrise or sunset missions around the park.

A few caveats for visiting this month are that there are limited ranger-led programs offered this month and inclement weather may close roads and trails within the park.

However, with the variety of hikes in Arches, scenic drives, programs, and stargazing opportunities, even a plan b for your Arches itinerary will be something to rave about.

Kauai, Hawai’i

by Jess from Uprooted Traveler

Kauai makes an excellent place for a tropical getaway from the chilly November weather. The island offers both stunning beaches and some of the best hiking trails on the planet, making this an excellent choice for beach bums and adventure lovers alike.

November is actually one of the quietest months on the island, so you’re more likely to snag a decent rate on airfare and hotel rooms, especially towards the beginning of the month.

With respect to its weather, the average highs throughout the month are in the low 80s, making this perfect for a relaxing beach vacation. And while you’re likely to get some rainy days, Kauai typically gets passing rain showers, instead of all-day downpours, so you’ll still have plenty of time to have adventures around the island.

Many of the best things to add to your Kauai itinerary center around exploring the Napali Coast, an 11-mile stretch of jagged sea cliffs, deep valleys, and lush mountains that stretch across the island’s northwestern coastline. The coast’s scenery is so rugged, in fact, that there are no roads that come here! Instead, you can take a helicopter tour and zoom over the 4,000-foot tall and impossibly green spires along the coastline, as well as see some of the rest of the island's otherworldly scenery, like Waimea Canyon or Mount Waialeale. Another excellent option is to explore the Napali Coast on foot by hiking the Kalalau Trail in Hā’ena State Park, a challenging hike that leads to some of the most remote and pristine beaches on the planet.

If you just want to take a few days to relax, don’t miss chilling out on Poipu Beach on the island’s southern coastline, which enjoys sunnier weather than the rest of the island and is renowned for its popularity with monk seals and sea turtles. Anini Beach is another excellent option to go snorkelling—just be careful of the surf if you’re visiting towards the end of November, given that the winter waves here can get quite rough.

Oahu, Hawai’i

Written by Jade at Namaste to Nihao

Oahu, Hawaii is one of the best destinations to visit in November for numerous reasons! Oahu, located in the Pacific Ocean of the United States, is an easily accessible paradise with direct flights from most major West Coast cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Seattle. While much of the country and the world is in a frigid tundra, Oahu, Hawaii provides a much-needed warm retreat with its magnificent sunshine and breathtaking beaches! Hawaii's November temperatures range from the mid-70s to the low 80s Fahrenheit, making it an ideal winter destination for outdoor enthusiasts. One of the best things to do in Oahu in November is go to the best sunrise sites in Hawaii, such as Lanikai Beach and Diamond Head National Park in Oahu, Hawaii. Starting your day with a view of the sun rising and casting a golden color over the horizon is a serene and truly uplifting experience. Any day I would swap out my snow boots for flip-flops and head to a beach in Hawaii to meditate at sunrise because there's something so special about that time of day!

Before visiting, read this guide to learn how to ethically visit Hawaii to be a responsible visitor. For individuals who like to give back during the holidays and are unsure if visiting Hawaii at this time is morally acceptable...During your Hawaii vacation, I suggest getting involved in environmental and community-serving initiatives like beach clean-ups, Thanksgiving holiday gift drives, and marine conservation education.

Visiting in early-mid November is the best time to avoid the late November crowds during the long Thanksgiving weekend. Check out the annual Hawaii International Film Festival which happens for two weeks in early November. Also, check out the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing events that is held annually in Northshore Oahu that runs from mid-November through December for a chance to see the world's top surfers!

Harper's Ferry, West Virginia

by Meeka from The Wandering Afro

Harper’s Ferry is one of the best places to visit in November in the United States. Located about an hour from Washington DC and Baltimore, it’s the perfect getaway for those who love the outdoors, history, and charming small towns.

Harper’s Ferry is located at the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. Making it one of the region’s best places to view fall foliage.

Arriving at Harper's Ferry is like stepping back in time. John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry in 1859, solidified this West Virginian town as one of the top historical sites in the USA. You’ll see lots of vintage shops, old-school ice cream parlors, and dated buildings.

History buffs will enjoy visiting one of the many historical sites such as John Brown’s Fort, White Hall Tavern, and a replica of a dessert shop from 1845, which happened to be owned by the first person from Harper’s Ferry to die during the Civil War.

Those who love the outdoors should consider hiking the Maryland Heights Trail. It’s a moderate to strenuous hike about 4.5 miles long. Although it gets a bit steep towards the top, the view makes it worthwhile.

It’s one of the only places in the country where you can see 3 states at once. At the Point, you’ll be able to see where  Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia meet along the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.

If you love adventure then visiting Harpers Ferry Adventure Center is a must! It's kid-friendly and features a rope obstacle course, ziplining, and even camping.

Crowds are mild during autumn and the weather is cool, averaging highs of 54°F so make sure to pack a warm jacket. Afterwards, refuel on hot coffee and great food at The Rabbit Hole. During colder months, you’ll have the option to choose between eating in their heated outdoor tents or inside.
